Red snapper are a widely distributed reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico, known for their longevity and early maturation. They can live up to 57 years. For the red snapper population to remain sustainable, it's crucial to have a large number of older, larger fish.
Here's why: older, larger female red snapper produce significantly more eggs than their younger, smaller counterparts. To put it in perspective, a single 24-inch female (approximately 8 years old) can produce as many eggs as 212 17-inch females (around 5 years old).
